2. I am finally ready to hibernate. I woke this morning and felt it. The change
in the air that signals the time for winter is upon us. I know I must hibernate
now as it is Winter and if I want to survive I need to pass winter in
hibernation. I decide to catch one last meal and the go find an area to start
my hibernation. Technically, it won’t be hibernation - I will only reduce my
activity to a minimum. I set off to find my prey and by lunch I have found a
small deer. It is strolling through the grass that is engulfed by a frost. It
looks vulnerable. I sneak up to it and within minutes it is down my throat. I
can eat my prey that is larger than my head as I have a very flexible jaw
which allows me to do this. I also have elastic like muscles so my ribcage
can pass the prey down into my stomach so I can digest this. I feel that this
is quite amazing, even I can’t get my head around it! Once the deer is down

I am slowly slithering back when I sense something. Even though my
eyesight isn’t fantastic, I can still detect movement. My instincts are telling
me to hide but I ignore them. I stay out in the open so I figure out what is
coming near. My ears sense vibrations through the ground and eventually
realise that people are making their way towards me. I am just about to
move into hiding when a gunshot echoes through the air. I am shocked to
the core until I become aware that I was the target. I try to slither away to
shelter by am picked up and stashed into the boot of a van. I then figure out
who these people are. Hunters. These hunters are always on the look out for
snakes so they get ahold of skins as they are very popular. I never really
took into consideration the danger I could be in, until now. I know the bullet
was fatal so I finish this journal by scratching my journal entry onto a leaf
and leave it there for who ever may find it.
